Our History

Aramis Sundiata Executive Director People's Justice Project

The People’s Justice Project, during the ‘hot phase’ of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2014 when African (black) people were engaged in spontaneous revolt over the countless assassinations of Eric Garner, Mike Brown, John Crawford, and Tamir Rice, created favorable conditions to accelerate the dynamics of political life for the African (black) working class. In analyzing the national conditions which gave birth to Black Lives Matter, the People’s Justice Project reinforced and insisted on building an organization to house the energy of the African masses in Ohio in a revolutionary trajectory. People’s Justice Project became a mass or popular political organization seeking to answer the ideological, philosophical and class question from the black revolution of the 60s. PJP is a political organization, that organizes the Black working class and other oppressed people leading the struggle against all state institutions that oppress or occupy our communities, whose survival has been assured time and again by linking our struggle to the struggle of the African working class and all oppressed people.

Our Methods

PJP seeks to be a political home for people who want to struggle together and build power with each other. Using a framework of Black Power, we organize to stop police terror and invest in our communities’ needs. We endeavor to help people enter political life and be a bridge, rather than a gatekeeper, to building deeper and broader-based movements for justice.

Mid-Term Mission

Improve the quality of life for Columbus residents by building collective power to make decision makers do what the community wants.

  • Support community needs and end police terror. Defunding the police and investing in public transportation, education, health for all, livable wages, affordable housing in integrated (not segregated neighborhoods), and community connectedness.

Long Term Vision

The People’s Justice Project (PJP) envisions a world without the carceral state and an end to colonialism–Africa and all colonized lands are liberated, all people have self-determination, and our minds are free of colonial teachings.

ABOLITION

  • Transformational change reflected in the civic fabric of our state – demonstrating the values of equity and justice, advocating for healthier communities, specifically communities of color, in a holistic way of truly making our communities safe.

Our People

PJP is an organization open to anyone who is invested in Black Power. We center the voices and leadership of Black people, while embracing the leadership of all BIPOC people and anyone impacted by state violence and police terror.

We are moms, aunties, and grandmas who fear for the safety and health of our babies.

We are students and young people who have lost too many friends to the system.

We are queer af and cis/het af but refuse to lose our bodily autonomy.

We are new to this work but have long memories of struggle.

We are veterans who get fresh joy every time a new face walks in the door.

We are dreamers, but we are people of disciplined action.
